Making Waves for Artmusic

Artmusic

Artmusic is the first online portal covering live classical music events across Australia. The product of two musicians keen on celebrating classical music with style and integrity, the identity literally makes waves – taking the name’s letterforms and cleverly turning them into a soundwave. The accompanying website is contemporary and clean. It showcases classical music as vibrant and dynamic.

Getting Saucey

Sydney chef Hamish Ingham came to us with a challenge to relish – literally. His new range of gourmet sauces and relishes needed a distinctive packaging solution and we had a lot of fun in creating a scheme that is as tasty as the contents. Bold letterpress typography speaks to the honesty of the ingredients and references the décor of his flagship restaurant, Bar H

“I love living in Sydney – it’s a city full of incredible discoveries. I don’t know why but I seem to spend my spare time, either on the way to the studio or on the way home, searching for flavour stimuli. Coffee is my morning addiction and a bad cup fills me with a deep sense of regret for the rest of the day. There are plenty of coffee shops around the world (and I have been to a fair few), but there is one that serves the ultimate coffee and deserves to be recognised for it. It is not a chain, but a place run on passion, and worth the trip for any coffee enthusiast.

My partner and I, Miya, discovered Tiger Mottle snuggled in the heart of Paddington on our walk to work one morning. The leafy, winding streets here are the closest thing we have to an English village, except the English villages I know, despite plenty of good things, never have great coffee. Now when I say great I mean oh. My. God. If I were on my deathbed and had one last wish, I would hold out and extend my life for a few days until Pete Henderson’s magic latte touched my lips. Henderson is a genius barista, quietly working his craft at his busy café with his wife, accompanied by a daily changing wall of vinyl LPs. And did I mention the food? All chemical-free; the Bircher muesli with wild fruits on top is extraordinary, especially sitting by the real log fire on a winter’s morning. The smell of the burning wood intensifies the flavour and I feel, after my pathetic 20-minute walk from home, that I deserve the treat. It reminds me of hiking across the South Downs Way in Sussex and stopping for a well-deserved pint and ploughman’s lunch at the Shepherd and Dog.

Tiger Mottle is amazing all year around but, unfortunately, I have over-indulged and my naturopath has ordered me to cut down on my coffee intake from three to one a day. All the more reason for getting it right.”

Fashion Envi

Frost* Design recently took part in a fashion show with a difference. Ontera invited us to take part in a competition where we were to design a fashion accessory from Envibond; a cushioned felt backing used with Ontera’s range of modular carpet tiles. Armed with nothing more than enthusiasm, a basic sewing kit and a dangerous amount of superglue; the team created the perfect English Gent’s outfit complete with umbrella, briefcase, coffee cup and Movember-styled moustache. The designs were debuted at event, ‘Fashion Envi’ in Walsh Bay and were met with much acclaim. Watch this space for our Spring Summer 2012 collection… We’re thinking polka dots.

Digging deep – Rio Tinto

The rich visual language of the mining sector has inspired Frost’s latest environmental graphics project for Rio Tinto’s new Brisbane Regional Centre. The project was an opportunity to connect staff in the corporate office to the operational coalface, featuring elements such as stencil-cut fonts, raw materials and super-scaled photography. Contoured panelling creates a sense of topography in the lift core, while lithological patterns (geological map codes for rocks) bring otherwise functional surfaces to life. The graphics complement the “Earth to Sky” interior concept developed by Geyer, the interior designers on the project.

Balla restaurant

In yet another collaboration with our longstanding clients the Manfredis, this new Sydney restaurant seeks to redefine the classic osteria Milanese. Named after futurist painter Giacomo Balla, the inspiration point for the design is the Italian Futurist movement, of which Milan was a major centre in the early 20th century. Balla’s depictions of light and speed were used as references for a custom-created typeface with its own sense of geometry and form. The striking typography and colours redefine traditional associations with Italian restaurants, preparing patrons for a gastronomic experience like no other.

Bite-Sized Design

We have recently completed a new identity for “MorSul” – the catering business of high-profile chef Matt Moran and business partner Peter Sullivan. The clever name captures the names of both partners as well as their offer as caterers. It’s translated into the design through the use of circular forms (evocative of small plates) that are combined in the logotype to make unique, symmetrical letterforms. The elegant black-on-cream palette balances the fun in the name, leaving no doubt that this is high-end cuisine. We are also in the process of developing the identity for Moran’s new restaurant in Chiswick in Woollahara at the former Pruniers site.
