Our design director Quan Payne presented his talk last Thursday on design expectation of the packaging industry a part of the Institute of Packaging South Africa (IPSA) Congress. The theme of the topic, “What’s the big idea”, looked at how the creative idea fits in to the consumer narrative. Using Woolworths South Africa as a case study, he discussed the way our philosophy has been applied to transform Woolworth’s brand perception, creating a new relationship between the company and their customers. Even though he was the only guy in jeans and t-shirt among suits, the talk went down really well!

poke 1 (pk)
v. poked, pok·ing, pokes
1. To push or jab at, as with a finger or an arm; prod.
2. To make (a hole or pathway, for example) by or as if by prodding, elbowing, or jabbing:
3. A feature on Facebook where a user can try to get another person to notice him or her
In our work we often face challenges that force us to go beyond the normal design process. When we were asked to take part in Graphic Material, it was a great opportunity for us to look deeper into the process of taking a two dimensional idea and transforming it into a three dimensional space. We settled on the word poke and set about realising the meaning of the word in three dimensions. The resulting artwork is made up of protruding steel rods fastened together to spell out the word poke.

A big well done to our Iron Designers Sarah, Ben and Andreas who powered through to second place at Friday nights event at the Powerhouse Museum. After wowing the crowds with the birth of Jesus in the first round, the word on the street was that they peaked too soon. The second round was neck and neck and in the end it came down to just .025 percent! Congratulations to sixty40 and their winning robotic dog/talk show host…
Re-live the glory over and over again here, and here.

Salade is the second book Frost* have designed for acclaimed chef Damien Pignolet. Damien’s first book, French, captured the essence of classic French cooking in Australia. Design wise, Salade is a continuation of French, using the same subtle typographical details that reference the content of the book –for example, using ligatures to represent aroma. As part of the design evolution of Salade, we worked with artist Michael Fitz James, who created the logo for Damien’s restaurant, Bistro Moncur, which appears on the front cover of French. For the new cover, the heart shaped plate becomes a heart shaped tomato – a simple, graphic representation of the subject at hand.
The new book will be published August 30 by Penguin Lantern.

Frost* are taking part in ‘Graphic Material’, an exhibition held as part of the Sydney Design Festival that opens tonight!
Driven by developments in digital fabrication, today’s graphic designers are utilising unconventional materials and technologies to push the boundaries of their discipline. Graphic Material explores this freedom through new and innovative works by local and international designers –on display are robotic drawing machines, spot-welded posters and visuals that grow over time. The lines between design disciplines, so long conceptualised in terms of their material output, are becoming increasingly blurred. Traversing contemporary design, art and technology, the exhibition is an exploration of graphic design freed from the constraints of paper and ink.
Curated by Aaron Seymour, the exhibition features work by Graphic Thought Facility, 3Deep Design, Toko, Design by Pidgeon, Bert Simons, Collider, Mark Gowing, Jeremy Wood, Karsten Schmidt, Seymour Design, Frost* and Trigger.
We’ll put up another post showing our work, but if you can’t wait head down to UTS tonight – Level 4 Courtyard, 702 Harris Street, Ultimo. The exhibition runs till 3 September. See you there.
