FROST* wins rebrand work for leading copyright organisation

We will rebrand copyright management organisation, Copyright Agency. The not-for-profit company connects creators and users of copyright material and represents authors, journalists, visual artists, photographers and publishers as their non-exclusive agent to license the use of their works for education and business.

The creative brief comes off the back of a new business arrangement which will see Copyright Agency manage some services for another copyright management organisation, Viscopy, and is a key part of increasing awareness about the value of creative content to both creators and users.

“Our organisation manages an important part of copyright for creators and publishers – the right to reproduce their works” said CEO of Copyright Agency, Jim Alexander.

The not-for-profit, member-based company has distributed nearly $1 billion since 1989 and now represents the reproduction and communication rights of tens of thousands of Australian creators and publishers.

“Our new identity must, first and foremost, communicate our values and positioning. In essence, the company rewards, stimulates and promotes creativity and the ongoing generation of new works, by providing an income stream to the creators and producers of those works. This activity drives a significant contribution to Australia’s educational, artistic, economic and cultural strength, heritage and future.”

As one of the objectives of the rebrand, we will also be charged with the task of reflecting the increasing role the organisation is playing in managing copyright for digital content creators. “Given the extent to which digital content is now becoming more and more a part of our business, we need an identity that is meaningful in an age of digital communication,” said Alexander.

Everyone at Frost* is excited to be involved with an organisation that is so vital to the survival of Australian artists and cultural contributors.

“The Copyright Agency works to ensure that artists and creative content makers can continue to make work and contribute to the cultural life of this country. I’m thrilled to be working with them to ensure their identity better communicates the positive contribution they make and help organisations who may not realise that they are infringing others’ rights to reproduce materials responsibly. Nurturing creativity in all its forms is something I’m incredibly passionate about, so it feels good to be involved in this project”

The rebrand is scheduled to be unveiled in May.

Creative Spaces

Creative Spaces

We spend a huge part of our lives at work, so when iconic One Shelley Street decided to incorporate Activity Based Working in their refurbishment we were more than happy to add a playful touch.

Collaborating closely with the interior design team from Woods Bagot, Frost* designed environmental graphics and introduced three-dimensional elements to establish a sense of place and communicate a flexible workplace vision. To strengthen engagement in the environment, the floors were given a specific theme around which the interior and graphic design were based.

Level eight, named “The Studio”, comprises of two areas that have been given an overarching Japanese theme with inspiration from contemporary Japanese architecture and pop culture as well as traditional culture and Shibori fabrics. Level nine, “The Warehouse”, takes reference from its industrial shipping wharf past, with an exaggerated warehouse aesthetic using optical illusions, depth, perspective and scale.

Redfern’s Welcoming Smile

Redfern's Welcoming Smile

Visitors to Redfern will notice a distinctive smile beaming at them as part of a major project to reposition the area’s image.

We worked with the Roll up Redfern Group to develop branding for the area, based around the idea of “welcoming”. The new brand comes from the insight that peoples’ perceptions of Redfern change significantly once they visit, but many currently don’t find it inviting.

Redfern-Waterloo is the heart of urban Aboriginal Australia and is also an area overflowing with creativity, alive with art, music, culture and ideas. The social and physical heritage has resulted in a strong community spirit, welcoming to all. To visually bring this to life, the identity is simply a smile – a universally welcoming symbol. The smile becomes a device for presenting information and is often displayed with photography of two people or objects that combine to create a face. The brand is not prescriptive so as to allow the various businesses and agents the opportunity to interpret the idea of “Welcoming Spirit” in a way they feel comfortable with.

Qantas’ Next Gen Check In

Qantas' Next Gen Check In

We have been working closely with Qantas’ executive creative director Marc Newson, to reshape the airport journey. The first step was designing the new domestic check in experience, the “Next Generation Check In” now in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne and soon to be rolled out in Brisbane. We designed a family of totems including the welcome, weigh and pack information. These distinct signforms make up a holistic system that is easy to understand, creating an intuitive airport experience for Qantas customers. We have contemporised the airport environment, designing new graphics, signage and customer communications that help streamline and simplify in line with the technological innovations in check in. We also created Qantas’ 90th anniversary logo which features on in-flight programming, sleeper-suits and advertising.

QLD Flood Relief

QLD Flood Relief

Frost* Design is proudly supporting the Queensland flood relief effort by donating a sculptural piece to the Design College Australia auction which will take place on 18 March.

Design College Australia sent out an SOS to the global design community to donate artwork for the flood relief. A huge number of the world’s prominent designers responded, with pieces donated from the likes of Milton Glaser, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister and David Carson to name a few.

We donated ‘Poke’, a sculpture we created for Graphic Material, an exhibition held as part of the Sydney Design Festival last year. We took a two-dimensional word and brought it to life as a three dimensional structure. The artwork uses protruding steel rods to spell out the word.

Head to the Design College Australia in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley on 18 March and bid on some world-class artwork. All money raised will go to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund.
