Digging deep – Rio Tinto

The rich visual language of the mining sector has inspired Frost’s latest environmental graphics project for Rio Tinto’s new Brisbane Regional Centre. The project was an opportunity to connect staff in the corporate office to the operational coalface, featuring elements such as stencil-cut fonts, raw materials and super-scaled photography. Contoured panelling creates a sense of topography in the lift core, while lithological patterns (geological map codes for rocks) bring otherwise functional surfaces to life. The graphics complement the “Earth to Sky” interior concept developed by Geyer, the interior designers on the project.

Creative Spaces

Creative Spaces

We spend a huge part of our lives at work, so when iconic One Shelley Street decided to incorporate Activity Based Working in their refurbishment we were more than happy to add a playful touch.

Collaborating closely with the interior design team from Woods Bagot, Frost* designed environmental graphics and introduced three-dimensional elements to establish a sense of place and communicate a flexible workplace vision. To strengthen engagement in the environment, the floors were given a specific theme around which the interior and graphic design were based.

Level eight, named “The Studio”, comprises of two areas that have been given an overarching Japanese theme with inspiration from contemporary Japanese architecture and pop culture as well as traditional culture and Shibori fabrics. Level nine, “The Warehouse”, takes reference from its industrial shipping wharf past, with an exaggerated warehouse aesthetic using optical illusions, depth, perspective and scale.

Canberra signs up

Canberra signs up

We’ve just finished a project with Canberra based property developers Molonglo Group. They approached us to create the placemaking and signage for 221 London, a prominent building located in the heart of Canberra’s CBD, refurbished by Architectus. We developed an identity that references the distinctive black and white striped effect of the base building. This idea has been brought to life with huge signage on the main building façade, covering seven storeys and reaching more than 26 metres high and almost as wide. The signform appears to flow in and out of the building like a ribbon. This strong visual language continues throughout the interiors of all typical floors, folding and overlapping, using positive and negative space, and black and white contrast to create a unique and highly recognisable identity for the building.

Qantas’ Next Gen Check In

Qantas' Next Gen Check In

We have been working closely with Qantas’ executive creative director Marc Newson, to reshape the airport journey. The first step was designing the new domestic check in experience, the “Next Generation Check In” now in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne and soon to be rolled out in Brisbane. We designed a family of totems including the welcome, weigh and pack information. These distinct signforms make up a holistic system that is easy to understand, creating an intuitive airport experience for Qantas customers. We have contemporised the airport environment, designing new graphics, signage and customer communications that help streamline and simplify in line with the technological innovations in check in. We also created Qantas’ 90th anniversary logo which features on in-flight programming, sleeper-suits and advertising.

Sculpture by the Sea Marquette – the making of

We created a marquette of our larger sculpture to be shown the exhibition held at the Bondi Pavilion. We found the bed frame in the Tamarama council clean-up which was perfect for us  as it references the site-specific nature of our main sculpture. The Marquette gave us time to work out how to put together the real thing.

Watch the video on our youtube page

It took four of us one day to complete (minus the lunch break as seen in the video!)

Typographsea

We’re really excited to be one of the entrants of this years Sculpture by the Sea exhibition.

Inspired by the rich history of Tamarama, the team have created a site-specific typographical artwork for the 2009 Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. 138 fluorescent orange letters spell out a verse from the poem “All in the Golden Afternoon” from Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The verse stretches across more then 600m of the Tamarama beach fence. The sculpture references the controversial theme park “Wonderland City” that stretched across the beach over 100 years ago, preventing the public from accessing their beach.

Thus grew the tale of Wonderland:
Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out
And now the tale is done,
And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.

The wonderland sculpture will appear along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk till 15 November.

Eugene Tan from Aquabumps has put together a panoramic view of the whole installation http://bit.ly/2fm7G3 Click on the link to use the zoom tool.
