And that’s a wrap

And that's a wrap

Judging is over, and thankfully no paper cuts. So much great work was submitted this year! The other 7 jurors and I had a tough job of working through hundreds of projects – we looked through around 3000 sheets of printed entries! Kept fully caffeinated, we deliberated and voted, to arrive at a selection of Honors, Merit and Juror awards, which will be announced at the SEGD 2012 awards ceremonyin June.

After the judging I managed to squeeze in some time to explore Washington DC. We swung by the White House, Abraham Lincoln statue and the Pentagon. I like to think that the armed vehicle brigade that drove past me from the white house was Obama.

I’m back in New York now- moved suburbs to Brooklyn – the artsy more laid back part of New York, full of young creatives. Eager to explore this new burrow!

Washington DC for the SEGD Judging

Washington DC for the SEGD Judging

Taking a break from New York, I’m currently in Washington DC. Myself and 7 other jury members are checking out the crème de la crème of Environmental Graphic Design from around the globe – from iPhone wayfinding apps to dramatic lighting installations. I snuck a peek and it was great to see there were plenty of Aussie projects in the mix. And with around 400 entries to sift through, I have a feeling it’s going to be a big day!

Frost* teams up with Matt Moran to brand a slice of Sydney dining

Frost* teams up with Matt Moran to brand a slice of Sydney dining

Matt Moran’s much anticipated new restaurant development on the former Prunier’s site in Sydney’s leafy Woollahra, will launch this month with an identity and branding designed by leading agency Frost.

The brief was to create a brand that would position the new restaurant, known as ‘Chiswick’ as a relaxed neighbourhood diner nestled in a unique, historic garden setting.

The restaurant is housed in what was once the stable and gatehouse of a vast Victorian mansion estate. In its glory days, the Chiswick house was surrounded by over 1000 acres of spectacular formal gardens – what remains today is a small public park, Chiswick Gardens.

The creative solution is inspired by the site’s historic gardens, as well at the recently planted 150 square metre vegetable garden that will supply the restaurant with fresh produce.

“What I found exciting about this project was the potential of capturing the coming together of two gardens, that both embody the sentiments of their age as well as the dining experience.
The marriage of the new vegetable patch, which is a very sustainable, contemporary idea, and the history- soaked, formal gardens gave us the idea of creating a solution that is both nostalgic and modern.” Vince.

Every element of the design has a botanical influence – from the logo design featuring tendril-like typography, through to the soft muted palette, sustainable materials and photographic studies of plants drawn from the gardens.

The logo is a bespoke version of AW Conqueror Didot light, a classic serif font design by famed French typographer Jean Francoise Porchez, who gave special permission for us to customise. The font was selected for its structure, like the formal garden, as well as it’s qualities of looseness and flow, which with our adaptations, are reminiscent of the leaves and stems of plant life.

Leading photographer Dieu Tan worked with Frost to create a series of black-and-white images that draw attention to the beauty of the often humble herbs and plants that give the restaurant its distinctive seasonal flavours and dining environment.

“The solution is elegant, sensual and totally grounded in an appreciation of the natural elements that make the restaurant such a special place.” Vince

We have rolled out the brand across all customer facing and corporate applications, including signage, website, menu, wine list, uniforms, bill presenters, canvas tote bags, tea towels, coasters and stationery.

The project follows on from other recent work with Moran and the MorSul Group including the MorSul identity and website. We have also created brands for other leading chefs including Steve Manfredi, including the identity for the newly opened Balla restaurant in The Star last year.

Says Moran: “We couldn’t be happier with the work from Frost. MorSul has worked with the studio on a number of projects and their ability to not only deliver exceptional creativity, but really understand the food and restaurant space we operate in, makes them stand out. The Sydney market is a highly competitive one and the role that strong brands play in creating a successful restaurant venture in this town cannot be underestimated.”

New York New York

New York New York

Design-obsessed take note: New York is a wonderland. Not only is it metaphorically a design wonderland for the creatively-minded, but it’s literally a winter wonderland with temperatures on average a chilly 32 degrees Fahrenheit (a mere 2-3 C). But you can’t let a little cold stop you, bundled up in my new pair of very fashionable gumboots that seem very trendy over here (though may not be in Sydney) we took to the streets. We’ve done the touristy must-do’s – central park, Rockefeller Centre, MoMA, Guggenheim, 9/11 memorial, sat on the steps of the met, ate a bagel, drank terrible coffee – but we also wanted to venture out of the traditional tourist parameters and experience New York as its locals do.

Our hotel is in an area called Chelsea, in the East Village, subways at our doorstep, and the High line is up the block. It’s very artsy with cute cafes, and boutiques shops, we’ve discovered the best little Cuban cafe called Coppelias that do semi-decent coffee, and breakfast for $5! So far haven’t forgotten to tip anyone (we hope!).

Next stop Washington DC for the SEGD Judging. You’ll hear from me again soon. Unless I freeze to death.

FROST* wins rebrand work for leading copyright organisation

We will rebrand copyright management organisation, Copyright Agency. The not-for-profit company connects creators and users of copyright material and represents authors, journalists, visual artists, photographers and publishers as their non-exclusive agent to license the use of their works for education and business.

The creative brief comes off the back of a new business arrangement which will see Copyright Agency manage some services for another copyright management organisation, Viscopy, and is a key part of increasing awareness about the value of creative content to both creators and users.

“Our organisation manages an important part of copyright for creators and publishers – the right to reproduce their works” said CEO of Copyright Agency, Jim Alexander.

The not-for-profit, member-based company has distributed nearly $1 billion since 1989 and now represents the reproduction and communication rights of tens of thousands of Australian creators and publishers.

“Our new identity must, first and foremost, communicate our values and positioning. In essence, the company rewards, stimulates and promotes creativity and the ongoing generation of new works, by providing an income stream to the creators and producers of those works. This activity drives a significant contribution to Australia’s educational, artistic, economic and cultural strength, heritage and future.”

As one of the objectives of the rebrand, we will also be charged with the task of reflecting the increasing role the organisation is playing in managing copyright for digital content creators. “Given the extent to which digital content is now becoming more and more a part of our business, we need an identity that is meaningful in an age of digital communication,” said Alexander.

Everyone at Frost* is excited to be involved with an organisation that is so vital to the survival of Australian artists and cultural contributors.

“The Copyright Agency works to ensure that artists and creative content makers can continue to make work and contribute to the cultural life of this country. I’m thrilled to be working with them to ensure their identity better communicates the positive contribution they make and help organisations who may not realise that they are infringing others’ rights to reproduce materials responsibly. Nurturing creativity in all its forms is something I’m incredibly passionate about, so it feels good to be involved in this project”

The rebrand is scheduled to be unveiled in May.
