100 Not Out
When asked to design concepts for the State Library of NSW’s centenary, Frost looked to the Library’s DNA to find the answer. The driving idea was to get the objects “out” into the public and create a sense of fun and surprise. We decided to construct a typeface using objects from the Library’s rare and unusual collection, as many people only associate the Library with books. This allowed us to put the objects in a new context, as well as exposing people to the many different aspects of the collection. The letters contain elements of maps, manuscripts, ephemera, relics and even the Library’s own historic architecture. Each letter took about two days as every shape needed to be deep-etched. The whole alphabet took around 400 hours to create. The type-face will be used to celebrate the Mitchell Library centenary next year, see it here http://www.onehundred.sl.nsw.gov.au
On a tour of the Library archive, it hit us that there were literally millions of objects all with incredible stories to tell and we wanted to share those stories with the wider community. We felt creating a type-face from these objects is a natural way for us to showcase the Library.” Says Vince Frost, “The process of research had a profound effect on the whole team. We really want people to get involved because we’d like everyone to be as excited about it as we are!
A major exhibition of 100 objects from the Mitchell Library’s collection will be on show for 100 days from 9 March 2010.
